My Grandfather

You know me as David, my middle name.

My first name is William. I am William Hitt, son of William Hitt, son of William Hitt.

My grandfather, the eldest of those William Hitts, died yesterday. His funeral will be Tuesday.

In lieu of trying now to write anything meaningful, I thought I would share this article, published a week before his death: Etowah County man served as pastor, worked with youth.

Through four decades of living in Etowah County — much of it as a reporter covering news stories — I thought I was familiar with most of its streets and roads.
After riding with Bill Hitt for two days in search of a runaway teen, I learned about back alleys, too. That was all in a day’s work for Bill, I also learned.

A juvenile probation officer at the time, Bill had worn many hats in the 30 years before this hunt — preacher, pastor, construction worker, junior high camp worker and more.
