Quote Backlog

I started a quote collection back when I lived in Indianola, probably around 13 or 14 years ago, and have been gradually adding quotes to the book ever since. When I started the “Quote of the Whatever” on the blog, I figured it would be largely drawing from that, with the occasional new quote that I might come across, assuming that I would continue seeing them at about the same rate I had been. The reality has been that I was wrong about that, for a combination of two reasons.

One, posting the sidebar quote has made me more aware of fodder for it; things that I might have read in the past and said, “oh, that’s interesting,” I now make a note of to post on the blog. And, two, I’m probably exposed to more good quotes these days, as the traditional sources have been supplemented by Facebook and Twitter, where people are frequently posting interesting things they hear.

As a result, I noticed that I’d built up a pretty substantial backlog of quotes to use as the Quote of the Whatever, and, rather than just letting that backlog continue to build up, I figured I should do a post to clear it out. And here it is.

“I am in the continual process of transcending fear-based rituals” — Robert Downey Jr.

“Your words are who you want to be. Your actions are who you are.” — Devry France Coghlan (And, as a corollary, someone noted, “When our actions match our words we become people of integrity.”)

“Religion and science are like a two-branched river. They have the same source and flow into the same sea.” — Ahmad Mahmud Soliman

“God is asking us to let go of the things we love and have given our hearts to, so that we can give our hearts even more fully to him.” — John Eldredge

“There is no substitute for silence. No trick. No shortcut … It isn’t a question of being comfortable with silence. Silence is not about comfort. It is about obedience.” “When we fail to practice silence, God must go to great lengths to get our attention through all the noisiness of our own thoughts, the noisiness of our feelings, the noisiness of the world.” — Ruby Zook

“You think you have to fix yourself first, but God will quiet you with his love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” — Jon Acuff

The quotes below are from a devotional I finished not that long ago, “100 Days of Trusting for Men”:
